Trousers for Every Body Shape: What to Look For

The language of body shapes in fashion has a complicated history. Pear. Apple. Hourglass. Rectangle. Triangle. These terms were introduced as a shorthand — a way of translating the enormous variety of women's bodies into manageable categories that could be matched to styling advice.

The shorthand has always been imperfect. Real bodies do not divide neatly into five categories. A woman described as pear-shaped by one system is hourly-shaped by another. The categories shift depending on who is measuring and what they are measuring for. And the advice that follows from them — wear this to disguise that, choose this to minimise that — has a tendency to frame the body as a problem requiring a solution rather than a reality requiring well-designed clothing.

With that caveat clearly stated: proportions are real. The relationship between a woman's waist measurement and her hip measurement affects how trousers fit her. The distribution of weight through her thighs and seat affects which cuts work and which do not. Understanding those relationships — honestly, practically, without the baggage of the word disguise — is genuinely useful.

What follows is a guide to what to look for in trousers across a range of proportions. Not what shape you are, but what your body actually needs from a trouser — and why.

First — the measurements that actually matter

Before looking at specific proportions, it is worth being clear about which measurements actually determine how a trouser fits. There are four.

Waist — your natural waist, typically the narrowest point of your torso. This determines how the waistband sits and whether it holds without gaping or digging.

Hip — the fullest circumference around your hips and seat, typically 20–25cm below your natural waist. This determines how easily the trouser goes on and whether the seat has enough room to move comfortably.

Waist-to-hip differential — the difference between the two measurements above. This single number is the most important determinant of trouser fit for most women, and the one that standard grading handles worst. A differential of 25cm or more places significant demands on a pattern that was designed for a smaller differential.

Rise — the distance from your crotch to your natural waist. This determines whether the trouser sits correctly when you stand, move and sit.

Know these four numbers. They are more useful than any body shape label, and they are what a well-designed size guide should be built around.

Fuller hips, narrower waist
Often described as pear-shaped or triangle. The most common proportion type — and the one most poorly served by standard trouser grading.
The common challenge
Trousers that fit at the hip gap at the waist. Trousers that fit at the waist will not go past the hips. The standard grading gap — scaling waist and hip at the same rate — means no off-the-rail trouser fits both measurements simultaneously.

The core requirement for this proportion is a trouser pattern that accounts for a larger waist-to-hip differential — one that does not assume the waist and hip are a fixed ratio of each other but designs for the real relationship between them.

In terms of cut, a higher rise helps enormously. A mid to high rise sits at the natural waist, where the body is narrowest, rather than below it where the transition between waist and hip is steepest. This gives the waistband a secure, comfortable fit without the gap that a lower rise creates.

Wide leg and straight leg cuts work particularly well for this proportion — they skim through the hip and thigh without clinging, and the wider leg opening creates a visual balance between hip and hem. A very tapered leg, by contrast, draws attention to the proportion difference rather than allowing the silhouette to flow.

What to avoid: mid-rise trousers with no waist adjustment, heavily tapered legs, and any trouser where the size guide is based on hip measurement alone with no consideration of the waist-to-hip differential.

Fuller waist, narrower hips
Often described as apple-shaped or inverted triangle. Less commonly discussed in trouser guides, but equally under-served by standard patterns.
The common challenge
Trousers that fit the waist are often too large through the hip and thigh, creating excess fabric that bags and shifts. The trouser lacks structure around the lower body.

For this proportion, the priority is a trouser with enough room through the waist and stomach without excess volume through the hip and thigh. A straight leg cut — neither too wide nor too tapered — works well, as it provides a clean line without the excess fabric of a wide leg or the restriction of a slim leg.

A longer rise is important here — not only for comfort but for the visual proportion of the trouser. A low rise on this body type can create a pulling and bunching across the stomach that a higher rise avoids.

Avoid waistbands with heavy structure or wide belts, which add visual weight where you have the most. A sleek, moderate-depth waistband — firm enough to hold its shape but not wide enough to emphasise the waist — is the better choice.

What to avoid: very wide leg cuts that add volume at the hip you do not need, and heavily structured waistbands that create a rigid line across the widest part of the body.

Proportionate waist and hip
Often described as hourglass. Waist and hip measurements are both full, with a defined differential between them.
The common challenge
Standard grading assumes a smaller differential between waist and hip — so even hourglass proportions with a pronounced waist-to-hip ratio encounter gaping and restriction. The issue is the differential, not the overall size.

For a pronounced hourglass proportion, the waist-to-hip differential is again the critical factor. The fuller both measurements are, the more the standard grading gap becomes apparent — a size chosen for the hip gaps at the waist, a size chosen for the waist restricts through the hip and seat.

A high rise is the single most useful feature for this proportion. Sitting at the natural waist — the narrowest point — it creates a clean fit without the gaping that a mid or low rise causes. The waistband should have enough structure to hold this position through a full day without rolling or shifting.

Wide leg and straight cuts work well, creating a balanced silhouette that honours the proportion rather than constraining it. Adequate thigh room is essential — a trouser that fits the waist and hip but restricts through the thigh is a common failure for this proportion and a sign that the pattern was graded uniformly rather than considered at each size.

What to avoid: low and mid rise cuts that sit across the widest part of the hip rather than the waist, and any trouser where the size guide does not account for the waist-to-hip differential.

Straighter proportions
Often described as rectangular or straight. Waist and hip measurements are relatively close together with a smaller differential.
The common challenge
Standard trousers fit the technical measurements but can feel shapeless — a lack of definition through the waist means the trouser hangs rather than sits. Waistbands often feel too loose even when the correct size.

For this proportion, standard grading actually performs better than for more pronounced differentials — because the uniform scaling assumption is closer to the actual relationship between the measurements. The challenge is not fit in the technical sense but fit in the aesthetic one.

A trouser with a well-structured waistband — one with enough internal interlining to hold a clean, defined line — creates the visual definition that a straighter proportion benefits from. A waistband that rolls or collapses eliminates the definition entirely.

Wider leg cuts work particularly well, creating shape and movement through the leg that adds visual interest. Pleat details at the front of the waistband also work well for this proportion — they add structure and create a tailored quality that a flat front cannot.

What to avoid: very slim or tapered cuts that reduce the visual interest of the leg without adding shape through the waist, and waistbands without sufficient internal structure.

Fuller thighs
A proportion that cuts across all body shape categories — many women with a range of hip-to-waist ratios have fuller thighs that are under-served by standard grading.
The common challenge
Trousers that fit the waist and hip become tight and restrictive through the thigh. The seam migrates forward as the day goes on. By afternoon, the trouser is uncomfortable.

Thigh room is one of the most under-graded measurements in women's trousers. As discussed in earlier Clyn pieces, most brands increase the hip measurement as they grade up but do not increase thigh room at the same rate — or at all. The result is a trouser that fits the waist and hip measurement on paper but restricts through the thigh in practice.

The single most important thing to look for is adequate ease through the upper thigh — typically 1cm below the crotch seam, where the trouser is at its narrowest. A trouser that feels comfortable standing still but tightens when sitting or climbing stairs does not have enough thigh room for all-day wear.

Wide leg and straight cuts accommodate fuller thighs naturally. Slim and tapered cuts almost never work for this proportion, regardless of what size is chosen — because the cut itself does not have enough ease through the thigh at any size to be comfortable across a full day.

What to look for: trouser brands that include a thigh measurement in their size guide, and that grade thigh room independently of hip measurement. Their absence from a size guide is almost always a sign that thigh room has not been considered in the pattern.

What this guide is really about

If there is a single thread running through every section above, it is this: the proportions that most women have — fuller hips relative to waist, pronounced waist-to-hip differentials, fuller thighs — are precisely the proportions that standard trouser grading handles worst.

This is not a coincidence. Standard grading was designed for efficiency, not for range. It produces trousers that fit the sample size well and approximate everyone else. For women whose measurements fall close to the sample, that approximation is good enough. For women whose measurements diverge from it — which is most women — the approximation fails.

The answer is not to find the right body shape label and shop accordingly. It is to find trousers designed from a pattern that was built around real proportions — where the waist-to-hip differential was considered independently, where the rise was measured for real bodies, where thigh room was graded properly. Those trousers exist. They are rarer than they should be. But they are what fit actually feels like when a pattern gets it right.
