The True Cost of Fast Fashion — A Real Calculation

A fast fashion trouser costs £25. This is the number on the price tag. It is also, in almost every meaningful sense, the least accurate number associated with that garment. It is the number that reflects only the transaction between the brand and the consumer — and none of the other transactions, extractions and costs that made that price possible and that will continue accumulating long after the purchase is complete.

The true cost of fast fashion is not £25. It is a great deal more than that. The excess does not disappear because it is not on the price tag. It is paid — by the workers who made the garment, by the environment that absorbed its production, by the communities living near its dyeing facilities, by the municipalities managing its disposal, by the next generation inheriting its cumulative consequences.

This is not an argument that fast fashion shoppers are bad people or that choosing it is a moral failure. It is an argument that the price tag is a fiction — a number that has been made possible by distributing its true cost across people and systems that have no say in the transaction and receive none of its benefit.

Here is what the real calculation looks like.

The price of a fast fashion garment is made possible primarily by the cost of the labour that produced it. Garment workers in the major producing countries — Bangladesh, Cambodia, Vietnam, Ethiopia — are among the lowest-paid manufacturing workers in the world. The gap between the wages they receive and the wages they would need to live with dignity is significant and persistent.

On a £25 fast fashion trouser, between 25 pence and 75 pence goes to the worker who made it. The remainder covers materials, manufacturing overhead, transport, the brand's margin, retail costs and marketing. The worker who spent hours cutting and sewing the garment received less than £1 of its retail price. The gap between what she received and what she would need to live decently is a cost the price tag does not include — but a cost that exists nonetheless, paid in the form of poverty wages and foregone living standards.

The environmental cost — what the planet absorbs

Water — the resource most visibly consumed by fashion production

Cotton is one of the most water-intensive crops in global agriculture. The production of a single kilogram of cotton — enough for approximately one pair of trousers — requires an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 litres of water, depending on the growing region and irrigation methods used. The Aral Sea, once one of the world's largest lakes, was reduced to a fraction of its former size primarily by irrigation for Soviet-era cotton production. The environmental consequence of that single crop decision took decades to manifest and will take centuries to reverse.

The water used in textile production is not neutral water — it returns to waterways laden with chemical dyes, fixatives and finishing agents. In major textile-producing regions of South and Southeast Asia, rivers downstream from dyeing facilities run in the colours of the season's collections. The communities depending on those rivers for drinking water, irrigation and fishing absorb a cost that does not appear in any garment's price tag.

Carbon — the emissions embedded in every garment

The fashion industry is responsible for approximately 8 to 10 percent of global carbon emissions annually — more than the aviation and shipping industries combined. These emissions are embedded at every stage of a garment's life: in the energy used to grow and process fibres, in the manufacturing process, in the international transportation of materials and finished goods, in the consumer's washing and drying of the garment over its life, and in its eventual disposal.

The carbon cost of a garment is an externality — a cost of production that is not borne by the producer or the consumer but by the global climate system. It does not appear in the price. It does not disappear because it is not priced. It accumulates in the atmosphere with every garment produced, contributing to a warming that is already generating costs — in extreme weather, crop failure, displacement and infrastructure damage — that are paid by the communities least responsible for producing it.

Waste — what happens to the garment after the wearing

The fast fashion business model is predicated on short product lifespans. A garment designed to be fashionable for one season and replaced in the next is a garment that will become waste — typically within one to three years of purchase. At the scale at which fast fashion operates, this planned obsolescence produces textile waste on a staggering scale.

The cost of managing textile waste — the landfill capacity, the incineration energy, the environmental impact of decomposing synthetic fibres — is paid by municipal waste systems, by local environments, and by communities living near textile waste processing sites. In West Africa and South Asia, vast quantities of Western textile waste arrive in markets and on coastlines, creating environmental and social problems that were generated by consumption thousands of miles away.

The real calculation — what a fast fashion trouser actually costs

Adding up the costs that the price tag omits produces a number that is considerably larger than £25. The calculation below is illustrative rather than precise — the true external costs of a single garment are genuinely difficult to measure and contested among researchers. But the direction of the calculation is not contested. The externalities are real. The question is only how large they are.

The fast fashion trouser that costs £25 at the point of purchase has a true cost of somewhere between £41 and £75 — and that is a conservative estimate that does not attempt to price the full community impact of pollution, the health costs borne by workers exposed to chemical dyes, or the long-term social costs of a fashion system built on persistent poverty wages.

The gap between £25 and £75 is not absorbed by the brand. It is absorbed by the workers, the environment and the communities that had no say in the transaction. The price tag is low because the cost has been externalised — shifted from the people who benefit from the product to the people and systems that bear its consequences.

What this means for how we think about price

The true cost calculation does not mean that every woman should be spending £150 on every pair of trousers. It means that the price comparison between fast fashion and slow fashion is not what it appears to be when only the price tags are considered.

A £150 trouser from a brand paying fair wages, using responsibly sourced materials, designed to last five years and worn three times a week generates a fraction of the externalities of a £25 trouser replaced annually. Its true cost — including what it does not extract from workers and environments — is closer to its price tag than the fast fashion alternative. The slow fashion trouser is not five times more expensive. It is closer to the same price, once the externalities are honestly accounted for.

This is not a comfortable argument for an industry that has built its growth on keeping the externalities invisible. It is, however, the accurate one. The price of a garment is a number. The cost of a garment is everything that number conceals. Understanding the difference between price and cost is the beginning of consuming fashion honestly.
