The Problem With Trouser Sizing Across Different Brands
You have a size you know. A number — or perhaps two numbers, one that works here and one that works there — that you carry as a kind of shorthand for your body in a shop. You reach for it automatically. You stop trying other sizes because experience has taught you which one is yours.
And then you walk into a different shop, or open a different website, and the number fails you. The size that fits everywhere else is too small here. Or too large. Or fits the waist but not the hip, or the hip but not the thigh, in ways that have nothing to do with your body and everything to do with the fact that the number on the label means something entirely different in this context than it did in the last one.
This is not an occasional inconvenience. For most women who shop across multiple brands — which is most women — it is a constant, low-level friction that makes buying trousers specifically one of the most reliably frustrating experiences in fashion. The problem is not new. But it is worth understanding precisely, because understanding it changes how you shop, and what you look for, and why some brands are better to buy from than others.
Why sizing differs between brands — the honest explanation
There is no universal standard for women's clothing sizes. This is not an oversight. It is a structural feature of the industry — one that has persisted not despite being a problem but partly because of what it enables.
Each brand sets its own size definitions. A size 12 at one retailer is defined by the measurements that retailer has decided constitute a size 12 — which may have nothing to do with the measurements that any other retailer uses. The number is a label. It is not a measurement. It does not guarantee any particular fit in any particular garment from any particular brand.
The reasons for this variation are multiple, and understanding them helps explain why the problem is so persistent.
Every brand begins its size system from a decision about what measurements constitute each size. These decisions are made independently, informed by the brand's target customer, its heritage, its competitive context, and in many cases simply by convention inherited from the original pattern maker the brand used at its founding.
The result is that a size 12 waist measurement varies significantly across the market. Based on publicly available size guide data from UK retailers, a size 12 waist measurement can range from 76cm to 84cm — a difference of eight centimetres between the smallest and largest interpretation of the same label.
Eight centimetres is a significant difference. It is the difference between a trouser that fits comfortably at the waist and one that is either uncomfortably tight or falling off. The same woman, shopping in the same size, across different brands, may encounter all three of these experiences — and attribute each one to a different fit problem rather than to the underlying variation in what the label means.
Vanity sizing — the practice of labelling garments with smaller size numbers than their actual measurements justify — has been documented across the UK retail market for decades. The motivations are commercial: customers buy more when the label says something smaller than they expected. The effect is a gradual, long-term inflation of what each size number actually contains.
A size 12 today is measurably larger than a size 12 was twenty years ago. This is true across the market, but it is not true uniformly — different brands have pursued vanity sizing at different rates and to different degrees, which means that the variation between brands has increased over time rather than stabilised.
The practical consequence is that a woman's size in any given brand tells you very little about her size in another. The label has become almost meaningless as a cross-brand reference — useful only as shorthand within a single brand's own range, and even then subject to variation across different garment categories within that range.
Perhaps the most significant — and least discussed — source of cross-brand size variation is the assumed waist-to-hip differential that each brand builds into its patterns.
Every trouser pattern assumes a relationship between the waist measurement and the hip measurement at each size. If a brand assumes a differential of 22cm at size 12 — meaning it designs the size 12 pattern for a waist 22cm smaller than the hip — then a woman with a 28cm differential will find that trouser gaps significantly at the waist when fitted at the hip.
Different brands assume different differentials. Some are designed for smaller differentials — more common among brands targeting a younger, slimmer customer profile. Others accommodate larger differentials — more common among brands explicitly targeting curvy or fuller figure customers. Most fall somewhere in the middle, and most do not tell you what differential they have assumed in their patterns.
This means that a woman with a pronounced waist-to-hip differential may find that she fits perfectly in one brand's size 14 and cannot get another brand's size 16 past her hips — not because the measurements are different, but because the assumed proportions underlying the patterns are different. She is not changing size between shops. The shops are changing what their size means.
The sizing problem is worse for trousers than for almost any other garment category, for a simple reason: trousers have more critical measurements than tops, dresses or skirts. A top needs to fit across the shoulders and chest. A skirt needs to pass the hips. A trouser needs to fit simultaneously at the waist, the hip, the rise, the thigh, the knee, and the inseam — six distinct measurements, each of which must be right for the garment to work.
The probability that all six measurements align correctly across a cross-brand size comparison is extremely low. This is why women who have no difficulty sizing tops or dresses consistently find trouser shopping disproportionately frustrating. It is not that trousers are harder. It is that trousers have more ways to fail — and more of those failure modes are driven by cross-brand variation in what a size actually means.
What to do with this information
Understanding why cross-brand sizing variation exists does not make it less frustrating. But it does change where you direct the frustration — away from your body and towards the system — and it changes how you approach the problem practically.
The most useful shift is from size-based shopping to measurement-based shopping. Rather than looking for your size in a new brand, look for the brand's size that corresponds to your actual measurements — waist circumference, hip circumference, rise. These numbers do not vary between brands. They belong to your body rather than to any brand's labelling decision. A size guide that provides actual measurements in centimetres is a size guide you can use. One that provides only dress size numbers is, in the context of cross-brand shopping, almost useless.
The second useful shift is to look specifically for the waist-to-hip differential a brand's pattern accommodates. This information is rarely provided explicitly, but it can be inferred from a size guide that includes both waist and hip measurements. If the differential at your size is smaller than your own differential, the trouser will gap at the waist. If it is larger, it will be loose through the waist when fitted at the hip. Only a brand whose assumed differential matches your own — or that explicitly designs for a range of differentials — will produce a trouser that fits both measurements simultaneously.
This is more work than picking your size off a rack. It should not be. The fact that it is necessary is a failure of the industry rather than a demand it is reasonable to place on the women who buy from it. But until the industry changes — until brands build size guides around actual measurements and design patterns for real differentials — the woman who understands her measurements will always be better served than the woman who trusts her size.
